Manipulative therapy is a ‘hands on’ system of examination and treatment that is beneficial for a wide range of complaints; including conditions affecting the spine, muscles, and joints. The examination enables the therapist to understand the root of the pain. The treatment may include massage, manual therapy mobilizations (moving joints in directions at different speeds to regain movements in the joints), advice on exercises and lifestyle.
As we have already mentioned, manipulative therapy takes a ‘hands on’ approach to help with the examination and treatment, aiming to help you the best way we can. In many cases pain is not where the problem lies therefore through our assessment we will aim to find the root of your problem. By using manipulative therapy it allows us to work away from the painful site of injury or pain.
Therapist use joint mobilisations that can sometimes cause clicking at the joint surface. Various grades are used from 1-4. Each grade and technique focus on something different; 1-2 pain, 3-4 stiffness for all areas of the body to restore movement and function within the spine and joints.
Massage uses a ‘hands on’ therapeutic application to help reduce muscle pain, the effect that muscles have on pain and injury. Whereas manipulative therapy uses joint mobilisations, massage and stretch, to help improve the function and reducing local and referred pain.
