Cosmelan® can be safely used on all skin complexions. It is effective on brown spots that have been resistant to other types of treatment. Cosmelan® does not increase sun sensitivity; however, patients are still urged to wear sunscreen when outdoors to prevent further sun damage. Although the treatment does create a slight peel immediately after application, there is minimal redness or flaking. Cosmelan® does not contain hydroquinone and is considered safe for long-term use.

Cosmelan® is a skin depigmentation treatment designed to diminish stubborn dark spots and patches caused by hormonal changes related to pregnancy or menopause, sun exposure, and laser or chemical peels. Cosmelan® reduces the action of the cells that produce skin pigment to create a more even skin tone. Melanin is the pigment that gives skin its colour. If there is too much melanin in one area, a dark spot will develop. Cosmelan® works by inhibiting an enzyme called tyrosinase that is necessary for melanin formation.

Procedure
After the initial consultation your practitioner will clean and prep your skin. The Cosmelan mask is evenly applied in a thick layer. The mask may lightly sting upon application, but the sensation will quickly dissipate. Depending on the level of correction needed, the mask must stay on between eight and twelve hours. You will be given detailed instructions for the appropriate removal methods for how and when to take the mask off at home. We will provide you with a full after-care kit and guidelines for use. A follow up appointment will be booked to assess your skin.
Downtime
Following your treatment you can expect 3 to 4 days of redness, sensitivity and mild swelling (not unlike a sunburn), and up to a week of peeling.

Although Cosmelan is suitable for all skin types and ages, we will ask that you attend a consultation, so that we can assess your skin and talk about the treatment in more detail. There will be aftercare requirements following a Cosmelan peel, so it’s important to discuss timings of the treatment (for example, if you are going on a sun holiday, we would wait until afterwards to treat you with Cosmelan).
Results can be seen after one, complete treatment. For deeper pigmentation, a top-up treatment may be required after one year.
Essentially, results can last as long as you want them to if you have sun-damage pigmentation. If you protect your skin from sunlight, you should maintain the results for up to 18 months. However, melasma and hormonal pigmentation come from ‘within’, so you may find that you need a top-up treatment once a year.
